University Information
Tumaini University Makumira was founded by the ELCT in 1997. The establishment of the University follows the decision of the government of Tanzania to liberalize the education sector and subsequent enactment of the Education (Amendment) Act No. 10 of 1995. More recently, the university has been re-registered through the Tanzania Commission for Universities, a body created through Act No. 7 of 2005 replacing the HEAC of 1995.The Chancellor of Tumaini University is the Presiding Bishop of ELCT, Dr. Alex Malasusa. The Vice Chancellor is Rev. Prof. Dr. Joseph W. Parsalaw and the Head office is located at Makumira Arusha Region.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), currently Tumaini University Makumira consists of five constituent Colleges: Iringa University College, Kilimanjaro Christian medical College, Tumaini University Makumira Dar es Salaam College, Stefano Moshi Memorial University College and the Sebastian Kolowa University College
TUMADARCo, a new acquisition of Tumaini University Makumira , is currently situated adjacent to Kinondoni Lutheran Church. It also occupies some of the buildings of the African Evangelistic Enterprises (AEE), which are only a stone throw away from the church. It also has a campus at the Kurasini Lutheran Congregation in Dar es Salaam. Another at Mikocheni and head office in Mwenge on the Sam Nujoma Road leading to Cocacola plant.
The origins of TUMADARCo are embedded in the then Waldorf College Tanzania (WCT) established in 1997 as a branch and later a college of Waldorf College, Forest City in Iowa, USA. WCT was a liberal arts college offering, by way of modules, two years of study in Dar es Salaam and another two years in a USA college to complete the Bachelor of Arts degrees in Business Administration and Management. Students had to transfer to USA with between 54 and 60 credits.
However, sometime in 2001, the authorities of WCT thought a partnership with Tumaini University would be to its advantage. Consequently, discussions opened between the relevant authorities through their various organs, and eventually in April 2003, TUDARCo was born as a constituent college of Tumaini University, joining its three sisters.
TUMADARCo offers both undergraduate, diploma, certificates programmes on full-time as well as part time basis during the day and evening. All TUMADARCO academic programmes run on a semester basis.
